An Alphabetical Presentation

Unlike the schematic presentation of the Metamorphoses, which offers epyllia in narrative order, this index lists each epyllion in the poem alphabetically. Like the schema, however, each entry in this list links to the corresponding passage in Humphries' translation. Click on the asterix at the end of each entry to see the text.

To standardize the names of epyllia we have followed some simple naming conventions. Whenever possible epyllia derive their names from their principle characters. So "The Deification of Aeneas" becomes "Aeneas, deification of." Where multiple characters dominate a tale, they appear in alphabetical order: e.g. "Apollo and Daphne," not "Daphne and Apollo. However, when one character narrates the story of another, the subject of the story precedes the narrator, regardless of alphabetical order. e.g. "Lelex's tale of Philemon and Baucis" becomes "Baucis and Philemon, Lelex's tale of." To avoid proliferating entries, each epyllion appears in the index only once, except in cases where confusion would result in the absence of cross-listing.

N.B. Though we have pursued a high level of accuracy in devising this index it is intended for use as a pedagogical tool, not a scholarly reference work.
